Beautiful film of Liam Scarlett’s “Variation Libre” and fascinating preview of new work “Sweet Violets.”

The Royal Ballet’s 8 hour live stream on youtube has just finished. I really look forward to posting the section from today’s broadcast which features Liam Scarlett rehearsing his new work “Sweet Violets” with dancers Leanne Benjamin and Thiago Soares. The piece is inspired by a series of Walter Sickert paintings which depict a grisly murder in camden (where I sit typing now!). Not only was the choreography poignant and condensed but it was Japanese-like in the way that Scarlett put meaning into each movement. He believed that the dance had to rise above the steps in it’s meaning and expression. At one point he talked about “making hands scream”. Above is a recent film of his work “Variation Libre” in which his choice of movements enhances the music.
